Maybe there’s something to this Social Networking thing

February 24th, 2008     by Jeff Lanctot

Community and Entertainment verticals continued to show very strong growth, each increasing more than 50% year over year. Over the past four years, the rise in billings in these two verticals has easily outpaced total billings growth.

Clearly social networks (a part of the Community category) and video sharing sites (in Entertainment) both have relatively immature advertising models. If ad models and industry standards solidify in these types of businesses, healthy increases in these two verticals are likely to continue over the next several years. There are a seemingly endless number of startups banking on it.
